“Do you want to print your brochure in 4 color?” “No, I want to use all the colors.”
This exchange between a print expert and a tech company CEO took place a few years ago. It points out that what may be a common term for a printer isn’t necessarily common to a customer.

Have you noticed that people who shout, “Print’s not dead!” tend to be printers or those who make their living off of print? It’s not a coincidence. Fighting for your livelihood is practical. And noble.

When people talk about printing, they usually focus on the front end of the process – the design, the size, the format, the colors (like 4C and PMS colors), the paper, and the printing itself – digital, offset, and screen, to name just three.
But let’s not forget the “back end” of the process – the stuff that happens to a print job after it comes off the press.
Post-press operations are a combination of binding and finishing.

Getting your electronic file ready to send to a commercial printer is a matter of “dotting i’s and crossing t’s,” as it were. You have to be careful and take certain steps to ensure that the file is print ready. If you don’t, you’ll delay production – and you might end up compromising the print quality of your job.

Do marketers care whether their service partners practice environmentally friendly business practices? Absolutely! However, you must be careful to look “under the hood” when considering working with a company that tosses around the term “sustainability” like beads off a Mardi Gras float in New Orleans. You can get swept away by promises and bravado.

If you’re in the market for a new commercial print partner, a little bit of pre-planning is a smart thing. Don’t approach a first meeting with a sales rep as a haphazard, 20-minute, unscripted interview. The bigger your print budget, the more you should prepare. Too much money is at stake to screw it up – but if you don’t ask the right questions, you could easily do just that.

As a marketer, you’re probably being wooed by commercial print reps every week. They all promise to put customers first. They all profess to have state-of-the-art equipment. They all vow to have competitive pricing.

More and more marketers are using QR codes on their direct mail campaigns. And why not? These little black-and-white (for the most part) squares of code are cool. They make print interactive. They open up the possibilities of sharing sites and sounds (sorry, bad pun) that a static printed piece can’t do on its own.
